Over the past 50 years, electrical and electronic engineering have made remarkable progress. The progress covers a wide range of our life, for example, lighting, home appliances, digital consumer electronics, including mobile phones, computer equipment and game machines, transportation such as electric trains, maglev trains, electric vehicles, factory production equipment, car navigation systems, highway ETC, social and medical equipment, robots and so on. In modern society, electrical and electronic engineering occupies a position as a core technology to achieve high-performance, complex functions, energy conservation and safety.

Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Electronic Science and Engineering relocated to Kyoto University's new Katsura campus in 2003. The two departments are striving to establish new academic and engineering disciplines while embracing interactions with the real world through a strong emphasis on fundamental research.
