Introduction to Research
Features of the Research Activities of each Department
Together with the former Department of Electronic Communication Engineering (the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering, and the Department of Intelligent Information Systems of Graduate School of Informatics), the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering have been collaborating on research work and on organizational, management, and educational activities. The main fields of research pursued by the Department of Electrical Engineering relate to electric power, systems and control, bio-engineering, fundamental theory of electrical engineering, cosmic microwave engineering (promoted by means of a cooperation course), and information media engineering. The main research fields of the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering relate to electronic materials and devices for future information processing, the development of ion and plasma emission sources and their application to device manufacturing, quantum optics and measurement, photon devices, semiconductors, and advanced electronic materials (cooperation course). Together with the communication network technology fields of the earlier Department of Electronic Communication Engineering, these research fields form the basis of the 21st century COE "Research and Education Center for Fundamental Electrical and Electronic Technology" and serve as the nucleus of the project. In addition, by forming a close relationship with the Venture Business Laboratory (VBL), the International Innovation Center within the university and a knowledge cluster of government-promoted projects outside the university, the departments have been constructing a framework for research that needs to be emphasized.
As its founding philosophy, the Department of Electrical Engineering forms a framework of electrical and electronic engineering that has developed into various forms and penetrated into other departments, thus positioning the fundamentals of electrical and electronic engineering (mathematics, electromagnetic, and circuit), electric power, and systems as the "nucleus of engineering." The department also strengthens its own foundation. Another characteristic of the department is that research was developed in recent years in the field of medical bioengineering, with a focus on medical applications of control engineering. The Department of Electronic Science and Engineering retains the philosophy of the earlier Department of Electronic Property Engineering before the reorganization. For this, the department is promoting the fundamental and advanced research necessary to construct hardware that can serve as a platform for electronics. Also, in order to construct a hardware foundation for our increasingly information-oriented society, the department is promoting research on new optical materials and photonic crystals, making use of the quantum effects of electrons and light, and their application to electronics, and also on quantum communication. Broadly speaking, each department has been implementing research based on this philosophy. In this way, each department is striving to express its own unique features.
